My name is Katharina Kneip, I am an artist from Germany and I have been travelling with my art project Round:Motion since January 2023. On the TOUR, I circumnavigate the globe on foot/skis on a northern route and cover the sea stages by kayak or sailing boat.
Last year I set off from my former home town Münster in Germany.
I travelled on foot via Denmark - paddling to Sweden - and on through Norway to Kirkenes in Northern East Norway. I spent the winter there, working, exploring the region and preparing for the next stage. At the beginning of March, I skied from there to Tromsø, from where I first sailed to Longyearbyen in Svalbard, spent the summer there and then sailed on via East Greenland to Isafjodur in Iceland at the end of August.
From there I hiked to a farm near Akureyri in September, where I have been living and working ever since and am preparing a few more tours locally and the next stage: heading west by sailing boat.
Round:Motion is not about breaking speed records or any other form of competition. The TOUR is part of the physical movement of the project - I have labelled everything else CLOUDING. This is my understanding of thinking about this movement as non-directionally as possible, reflecting - in the broadest sense about the body, culture and nature, about existing hierarchies between these and hierarchies developing from them in other areas of society. Everything I have done, thought and felt since I physically left Münster is part of Round:Motion and the CLOUDING will continue even after the end of the TOUR in a few years. On the road, I meet and collaborate with different artists, I am in contact with many people who participate in Round:Motion in different ways and work on a network that develops along my route and from there to many more.
Since you bring together the most adventurous and also open minded people I am hoping to find some support from you.
Unlike hiking, skiing and canoeing, I don't sail alone, but am looking for sailing opportunities.
So I would like to ask:
Do you know someone sailing from Iceland to Canada in 2025? Is there perhaps the possibility to come along as crew or guest? Optionally from West Greenland to Canada? Or do you have any other ideas?
I am completely flexible in terms of exact time and route as long as I can somehow get to a harbour in Canada by sea where I am officially allowed to enter the country.
On board I can help with sailing, I'm also good at fixing things, cleaning, cooking and I'm a calm and positive person and reliable, when it comes to shift work or other things that have to be done.
Of course, I can also contribute to the costs or pay something.
If possible, I would also collect data for Sailing for Science during sailing.
